Cell Wall

The cell wall in plants contains cellulose. This cellulose acts as roughage in our diet and therefore is very important for us.
We cannot get roughage from animal foods, as animal cells do not contain a cell wall.

Electron Microscope

Cells can be seen through a powerful optical microscope, which magnifies objects a few hundred times. An electron microscope, magnifies objects over 50,000 times. The image produced by the electron microscope is projected onto a fluorescent screen or recorded an film. The first commercial electron microscopes were built in the 1930s. With its help, scientists could see structures inside a cell that could not be seen with an optical microscope.

Hydroponics is a new technology that enables plants to grow in the nutrient solution rather than in the soil. It is an important technology for growing crops in future as there is reduction in the availability of land.

Tetraethyl lead is often knocking of car engines. This is a highly poisonous chemical. New car engines are designed to use unleaded petrol which is less polluting.

Defence against Viruses

Our body has a special defence mechanism against viruses. When viruses attack your body, some body cells that are infected by viruses produce a protein called interferon. This protein interferes with the reproduction of viruses in surrounding cells. Interferon protects against viral diseases, such as flu, common cold and hepatitis.
