Cells can be seen through a powerful optical microscope, which magnifies objects a few hundred times. An electron microscope, magnifies objects over
50,000 times. The image produced by the electron microscope is projected onto a fluorescent screen or recorded an film. The first commercial electron microscopes were built in the 1930s. With its help, scientists could see
structures inside a cell that could not be seen with an optical microscope.
